Hobbies

I went to Toronto this weekend and found out that my cousin quit his job at IBM to start up his own business with a friend. He’d been doing photography as a side job for 5 years, doing miscellaneous weddings, parties, more weddings, etc. to a point where his clientele has developed enough to make this a full-time gig. He’s one of those who have turned a hobby into a job, which is super fantastic! A friend gave me great advice, find something that you enjoy and work at it during your free time. It’s when you actually practice at it and develop those corresponding skills that you become specialized and those who don’t have the time or don’t expend the time to develop these skills will pay you for it!

… Rather obvious hey? It is but do we actually go about seriously pondering this very reasonable, very obvious fact? I don’t think so, otherwise, why do we have so many people doing the standard 9 to 5 and disliking it? Perhaps they just don’t know what they enjoy or they don’t have the time to think about it or they don’t have the time to develop those skills. I guess that’s the deciding factor, will you be passive or active about your search for freedom from the 9 to 5? Will you expend the time to soul search? To practice? Will you expend the energy to try and fail and try again?

My cousin did, I hope it works out for him.
